Has anyone ever been in a situation where they've had to drive their van after the hydraulic steering pump has failed?  I'm trying to establish if is possible/safe to drive a van with non-operational PAS, with all hoses disconnected and drive belt removed.
Anybody?

You can drive the van like this, but the steering will be a bit heavier than a non-PAS van.

That’s how our van is at the moment, while I’m pulling together all the bits to get it fixed. It’s not really a problem except in situations like parallel parking where you can count on getting a real workout.

I have (hade it's being replaced with a hydraulic one with the new engine) an electric pump on a hydraulic factory system which stopped working, made the stirring heavy when slow but not much difference once moving faster.

Electric pump on a hydraulic oem system, which pump have you used?  From what I've seen, the Volvo pump is popular for this application, do you have any photos of the pump set up please?

I think it was from a Corsa (I might be wrong, fitted by  Fellowes speed shop) it always seemed to make a winning noise.

This one hanging in the breeze because the supports have been removed.


They cut a hole behind the lower grill to fit the hydraulic fluid reservoir. (Sorry, no photo of that), vans away so can't take one at the moment.

Peugeot 106/Saxo, Mercedes A class, Renault Clio/Kangoo TRW pumps are all commonly used, standalone 12V hydraulic PAS pumps.

Thanks for those, much appreciated.  My concern is having to live with the pump noise if fitted up front, how noticeable would you say it is?  It wouldn't be much extra work to fit it in the engine bay of required to overcome the whine.  In fact, I think it would be a lot easier to install in the engine bay and run the longer houses between the two.

I think I noticed it mostly when stationary and at times, it was annoying, it tended to blend in more ones moving (probably because I was concentrating on other things). I did wonder why it was not in the engine bay as most of the pipework was already in place. Should all be fixed and quiet when I get the van back with its new engine (& hydraulic PSP attached).

Have I understood you correctly, are you having the pump relocated to the rear as it was originally?

he's changing engine to one with a stock p/s pump iirc

The Subaru EE20 that was in there didn’t have a hydraulic PSP on it.
The AHU will.
It's only taken 18+ months and counting,   I will ask Tim Mathers (North Devon t4s) if he can send me a photo.

Hi again, I'm now veering towards having the pump installed upfront like yours was.  I'm hoping and praying the noise won't give me reason to regret it, I am thinking it may be possible to shield the noise by increasing the sound proofing on both sides of the floorpan.  May help. may not.  If you are able to send other photos at some point I'd be very grateful.

Casual observation: the long hydraulic hoses required for a rear mounted pump (engine driven or electric) act as a crude radiator to cool the ATF fluid. If you mount an electric one up front (short hoses) you can connect the electric supply close to the main battery so there's less 10mm² cable required.
A rear mounted electric pump can get its supply from the alternator. Swings and roundabouts really.
