Exhaust cost

Just been quoted £240 to sort the blowing exhaust

How easy is it to change one? pretty sure it only needs the back silencer but not sure if its worth replacing more than that. but £240 seems very pricey if its something me or someone else on here could do cheaper.

First check what is actually blowing.. and the state of the whole exhaust.. then we can say. The whole ting is quite expensive..

its blowing from the joint into the back silencer, the rest of it is quite rusty but seems solid to the tap

You'll need an 025 251 509 A gasket

Some have screws into the silencer flange, some will ahve nuts behind the flange. Use all known techniques to get them out, lots on the Wiki (Genereal Techniques etc.) on removing such things, including drilling out

They're M8x30 (early) or M8x45 if late with nuts..

Clean and true up the faces (soemthing in Wiki on this too) and if you do that well you can get away with some white exhaust paste if no gasket (GSF should do them though).

Give that a go?

Just replaced the Exhaust Manifold Pipe including the Cast Exhaust Elbow. 2 Parts cost £65. Also needed a fitting kit

My manifold pipe broke off from the cast exhaust elbow, same pipe as yours - other end :) The elbow also needed replacing as it was a lump of rust and theres a metal ring/olive that seals the two together, you'll probably need to replace the elbow too if its the pipe and not the silencer.

Glad I had a go (despite bare nuckles, stiff neck etc) as Kwik Fit quoted £140 to supply/fit 2 parts), not bad but once taken a part the 2 Exhaust Pipeworks (from engine block) would have needed replacing me finks (in Kwik fits opinion) as 2 bolt holes were rusted through, managed to bolt these to the elbow quite solidly. Kwik fit would have been £250 :( one thing leads to another....

Know I'm putting off the ineviteable but my vans new to me (6wks), cheap £800 semi-converted microbus with other probs :( so don't want complete system yet.

What I'm saying is have a go before getting roped in unless you think your vans worth it then I'd go for stainless steel (after reading the threads here)

btw its a very accessable area, especially if you park the rear/near side wheel on the kerb, did it in 2hr shifts with cans of 1664, defintely needed whilst hack-sawing the bloody bolts.

Good luck
