AAZ turbo clearance + vgt?

The custom engine mount bracket on my AAZ fitted by previous owner is looking worse for wear so I was planning on fitting an original JX bracket. I've got the AAZ 3 bolt manifold (028 253 033 R) but the turbo is a garrett t15 which it seems was never fitted to these and the wastegate actuator comes right up to the top of the engine mount rubber:

Going by the angles of the oil drain it doesn't look like it was ever re-indexed either and the wiki page that all the old posts refer to has disappeared!

It's possible the custom mount was the wrong shape or has sagged and fitting a JX mount will give some more clearance anyway as the top of the engine doesn't sit as high up as others seem to mention.

What needs to be done to extend the wastegate rod if it comes to that?

Also it sounds like the t15s on VWs had VGT, is this controlled internally or is there something outside the turbo that needs the be hooked up?

A mount is on its way so will hopefully things will become clearer then but Im just exploring possibilities so the turnaround as quick as possible!

Looks like you have an Epytec engine mount there

Similar but not quite, it's 3 bits of box section welded together with flat plates on the end for the block. The top left one wasn't even offset so it's only ever had 3 bolts.

Might be an early one when they realized that it had to be in several parts to get some adjustment? Or its a copy, or Epytec copied someone else's work (wouldn't be the first time)

GMB-mount also made similar (better) products iirc

From what I have read, there aren't two Tdi conversions that are the same.

Here's the condition once I got it out:Image bottom left chewed up, bottom right snapped, top left no bolt, and top right bent. All made of 8mm steel and weighs a ton. Assuming it went in at the same time as the engine it's only done 18k miles

Picked up a JX bracket in Sheffield, flipped the rubber mount and put the new bracket in, the left side of the engine sits about 3 inches higher! No space for the wastegate actuator in its original position so made up a bracket for the actuator itself, and for the lever so it's working at the same angle.

Engine cover has a cutout already but it's in the wrong place so thats next!

You wouldn't be the first person to have one crack, used to happen a lot iirc. Poor attention to detail in the design, the flat lugs should have gussets to stop them flexing and failing due to metal fatigue.
PS that nylock will last about 5 mins before the plastic melts :D

I did think of welding it back on and adding gussets, but since I don't really have a clue how metal fatigue etc works and my welder probably can't handle 8mm I thought this was a safer option.

I didn't think about the nyloc! Its now done 300 miles and had a peek yesterday when the engine was hot. Surprisingly the nyloc is still pristine and the lever it's on was hot but touchable

Diesel exhaust is a lot cooler than petrol so that's why the nyloc has survived!

8mm thick? Sounds like they went for thicker metal to reduce flex over propr design.

Diesel rattle will find any wek areas and start cracks in brackets in no time. Been there in a previous life.
