Dowel on flywheel dg engine

I want to rotate my flywheel by a fifth of a rotation as the ring gear is worn in the normal crank stopping places. It has a dowel in the crank so I would drill another hole in the next quadrant of the flywheel holes. Is there any reason the crank has a dowel and any reason I can’t rotate by a fifth. I am guessing the dowel is needed if a flywheel has a TDC mark or something, but I can’t see anything like that.

I dont understand what you're trying to achieve.
TDC mark on the pulley is a U shaped groove and the timing mark is a V shaped groove.

I thought the tdc arrow/mark was on the clutch for the flywheel.

Flywheel has a TDC pickup on the back , should be a pickup cable coming from the top of the case face the connector of which should be secured to the alternator, it only works with the original factory VW diagnostics tool/scanner; most engines that have been rebuilt have lost the sensor and cable and now just have a hole in the case or the shortened remains of the sensor acting as a bung
so that's why the flywheel is dowelled and the bolt pattern odd

Forgot about that! . All the ones I've seen have been cut as there are defunct so it just gets omitted from my brain..

Useful info thanks. I will reuse the flywheel now I can rotate it 1/5 .

Not sure you can, the bolts holes positions
aren’t all the same

Thats inline engines

Is it worth drilling a hole for the dowel in the flywheel or just removing dowel from crankshaft I wonder. I guess if it pulls out easily…still getting over 2 broken head studs and crankcase welding on eroded water jacket.. so trying to save the environment and the cash..

Flywheel rotated by 1/5 rotation. All working fine and starter engaging every time. Thanks for advise
