Petrol in the engine case.

Hi I'm new on here so hello everyone
I have a 2l cu Aircooled t25. It was parked for 14 years. I had it trailered to my yard and managed to get it running easily. I have since rebuilt the carbs which needed a new float as one had split. The van starts if I give it throttle but there is both blue and black smoke! It runs then dies. I've done all the service items but there is now large quantities of petrol getting Into the oil. I would be grateful for any advise. I've built a 1600 for my bay window so not scared to get tucked into a bit of engine work!

A split fuel pump diaphragm would be my first suspicion

Have you got a fuel pressure regulator?

Yes I have fitted a filter king with gauge. I have bypassed at the moment to check the flow of petrol. Plenty of that. What is the correct psi?

Of hand it’s 2.5 psi, but I would need to double check I remembered right

Could be float chamber too full. Might be caused by using a gasket under the float valve that is too thin. Most kits have a selection of thicknesses, well, three anyway.

Thanks for all the replies so far appreciated it. So I've been advised by my mate who is a mechanic to go back to a mechanical fuel pump to eliminate the electric fuel pump as that's the way vw intended it to be!

If the fuel pressure is to high it will push past the needle valves and fill the sump with fuel , fuel pressure regulator will sort it , an original mechanical fuel pump is the ideal setup but finding one maybe an issue

It happened almost 30 years ago and cant remember if i changed the pump, the fuel got in and  raised the oil level, this happened shortly after an oil change and i thought that i overfilled the oil so drain it down but it ended up to low and thin and a circlip came out of position on one of the hydraulic lifters and took a little trip inside the engine with a loud noise ! I was told it was the carbs but i got another engine and used the carbs from the damaged engine and had no problems .
