Is Alpha Batteries still the go to business for starter batteries that fit under the drivers seat (1.9DG...175mm high?) or is there a new flavour of the month?

Tayna Batteries. I've been using these for a while now for all my vehicles. Excellent value, UPS delivery and very knowledgeable on the phone. They certainly seem to know the quirks of our vans.

Regards, Max.

Alpha seemed clueless when i wanted a leisure battery , they only wanted to sell me a re=stickered starter battery .

Tanya have a good name , i however opted for Advanced 075XD Type Car Battery from advanced battery supplies on ebay

In three years its been faultless , still two years left on warrentry

Tayna gets my vote too. Top service. Recently bought one for my son's VW Polo. Ordered at 16.30 hrs, arrived next day by 14.00 hrs. 👍

Unfortunately there are no real "leisure" or traction batteries available in the size that fits under the seat. (There are some in 190mm height. Those fit but without a lid)
And real traction batteries die quick when being kept charged to ~14V by an alternator. My Banner did not survive a 4 week trip. The water boiled away from the top of the plates.

To OP:
In starter battery brand do not really matter unless you keep the van off the road for longer periods. Not much sensitive electronics are present. With a working charging system any battery will be able to start the engine for a long time.
Buy one that fits your budget and has the longest warranty.
