Engine Fire, now dies on idle

Hello,
I've got a 1989 1.9 t25 and recently had a small fire where the fuel line above the engine had perished. It melted through the vacuum advance pipe and the wire that goes to the little black thing on the carb (?).
I replaced all the pipework and wires and the van now runs. Once youre up to speed everything is fine, but stopping at any junctions and the van dies while it idles.
There also sounds like some backfiring/popping on deceleration.
I checked the vacuum advance on the distributor by connecting a vacuum pump but im unable to create any sort of vacuum, so im assuming the fire must have melted the diaphragm inside. Could this be the cause of the stalling on idle?
I thought idle timing was set with the vacuum removed anyway so just assumed it must idle ok even if there was a problem here.
It obviously needs replacing so thats the next step, but do these symptoms suggest anything else i should be looking at also?
Many Thanks
