Hi All,

Sod’s Law driving to overnight ferry and it started over charging and cooking the battery. My digital read out was showing 16.7volts at the leisure battery and the main battery was boiling over. So I have a regulator arriving hopefully before 1300 today to get up and running but I can’t tell from anything on the alternator which AH size it is. It’s on an early 84 1.9 Dg. The reason I ask is if anyone could give me a hint so I could go and grab a 45ah one from click and collect at just Kampers if the regulator doesn’t show up. I can see it looks similar but the stock photo on just Kampers looks like the pulley is offset slightly more. I have a photo just can’t figure out how to post it?

My limited knowledge thinks that the three main types of alternator are -
Diesel,
90 amp hour (injection engines usually)
45 and 65 amp hour (normally carb engines).

So my guess is a petrol alternator 45 or 65 Ah should be the same as yours.

The regulated output should be between 14 and 14.5 volts.

Does your alternator have plug sockets or is it thread and nuts to attach wiring?
Something in the back of my mind tells me early 45amp alternators simply plug in.

Where are you heading for your ferry? I have a spare near Dover.

Also you may need to exchange pulley's to use that one from JK.

What a bloody nightmare that was! Your replies helped massively. I managed to get to just kampers to pick up the 45ah that they had online. The pulley was wrong but the bloke at the click and collect on Sunday was an absolute star and helped me get the pulley off before I left. A race home to crack off the pulley on the knackered one and we were away on the overnight ferry! It was a 45ah with the plug which was fitted. No idea why jk sell with that massive pulley on though? It could never fit a dg engine.
