Sulphur smell after we start up

Hi. A week ago, for no apparent reason, this started happening. We don't think it's the leisure battery as we stuck our noses in to check. Could be the car battery, but it's new and there's no signs of any issues externally. Could there be any other explanation, or must it be one of those? We don't have a catalytic converter. Any ideas or help greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

Robert

If you are getting a “eggy smell” the battery is cooking , get the charge voltage checked ASAP

As Mocki says - its most likely a dead leisure battery off-gassing when the engine is running, and the battery is being charged by the alternator. You can verify this by disconnecting the leisure battery and then running the engine - if the smell isn’t there any more then you have your culprit.

Is the smell only there just after start up, or does it continue for the duration of the journey?

It’s worst at first, but we notice it comes back if we are in a low gear it higher revs. We isolated the leisure battery from the car battery and still got the smell.

Thanks for all your help so far.

I had an alternator regulator fail, charging the main battery at 17v. Very eggy! You'd better measure the voltages while running as said.
