Hello you guys,
I've searched the forum for an already existing topic but didn't find it. So sorry in advance if there is somekind of information allready available.
Can anyone tell me if my current front plate is "good enough" or if I should replace it? You see definitely a gap.

If yes, which one? Is this one

Many thanks!

Hi, I'm no expert, far from it, but that looks like the wrong tinware to me. I have a 1980 air-cooled 2.0 and mine lays flat to the bulkhead and seals against that. I've just crawled out from underneath it, setting my cam followers, but could get a picture tomorrow if it would help.

What gearbox have you got? Looks like someone has put a late/5 speed box and engine mounts on an air cooled van and shifted the engine back to suit.

Hi Cobblers,
I just have a normal 4 speed manual gearbox.
Kind regards,
Koen

What is the history? could someone have fitted a later gearbox? even a 4 speed.
Do you have a picture of your gear linkage? How far back on the side of the gearbox does it attach - 5cm from the front end of the gearbox, or about 20cm from the front end?

That all looks normal for an early air cooled, I must have been barking up the wrong tree, sorry!

As mpta says, there should be a 90° fold at the edge of the tinware. The rubber seal fits horizontally bridging the gap.

Hi, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I have attached some pictures, hope they're good enough. Mine definitely has a return lip on
the top edge. The original link you sent with the new part looks like that's off a T2 van. Hope these help.
Thank you for the pictures! You are correct! It seems that my front engine plating is not correct and it's from a T2.
I'm starting my search quest!
Thanks for all the answers!
