4 speed box but 5 speed selector

Not had my van long. I'm pretty sure it was originally a 5 speed box. Now a 4 speed. But changing gear is problematic. I'm thinking the 5 speed selector is still in there. What's the best fix for this problem? Am I best to try and source a 5 speed box or can the selector be modified? Thanks.

I would have thought fitting a four speed selector would be the way forward.

When my 5 speed box went away for refurbishment i fitted my spare 4 speed , i didnt change or alter the linkages .it worked fine .
My linkages were tip top , recently refurbished to try and cure the issue that was actually my gearbox.
If your linkages are crap, they will be crap no matter which box , if they are good, they will be fine , the only difference is the access to the gate for 1st gear , which you wont have in the four speed box, only 2nd to 5th ( in position not ratio)

Well the issue I'm having is that reverse and 1st are very close together. And 3rd. It's tricky to drive atm. It's easy to get it wrong and easy to be in reverse by mistake. Not good. Thank you for your reply.

That sounds like ( if you have 5sp linkage etc ) that someone has removed the aluminium guides or the linkage is mid-aligned.

My issue was the reverse.
Originally 4sp and a previous owner fitted a 5sp box.

They also decided to cut out all the guides in the shift housing, so the symptoms you explain are similar to what I had going on.

Underneath the van, and directly under the gearstick, there is a box that sticks down.
Crawl under and take a pic looking into it.
( imagine being half way from front to rear, looking toward the front of the van )

Look underneath at the gear stick location and check what selector it is.
