Fuel Sender….have i got the right year?

E D I T….the gauge randomly started working fine today. I think the float may have been stuck for some reason.
Hi
Just had the petrol tank replaced and of course the sender unit. The van is an E reg (‘87) therefore I got the late sender unit ‘86 on. When they added fuel the gauge moved, but there wasn’t much to add as I had run it low on purpose. I then brimmed the tank on the way home and the gauge only gets up to the top of the red. Faulty new sender or just the wrong one? If it is the wrong one, I think it will still fit the later tank ,83 onwards…right? I’m wondering if my van is actually earlier than the reg plate says. Would Autohomes have maybe taken a while to convert/register them after they imported them? Any way to tell?
Thanks all

This thread has resistances for new and old.
TBH, if I am reading it right, you would think near a full tank should be about right - it's when the fuel runs low the disparity would be apparent.

Further down that thread there is a mention of an earth point to check.

Thanks. That’s a really interesting thread….some clever bods out there. Way above my head, but yes it seems like even with the wrong sender I should be at least getting a larger reading that I am with a full tank. Can anyone confirm the thinking please? Unfortunately everything is fitted and I don’t have the original sender to compare. Cheers
