Hi, I’m replacing my rear brake pads, but need to cut off the rear drums as they are seized solid, so will obviously be replacing the drums. My question is will I also need to replace the brake back plates, any help kindly appreciated, thankyou, Ady

TBH. I have never heard of anyone having to cut rear drums of to remove them. A good whacking with a lump hammer usually does the trick.

I agree with ROB about removing drums.

Daft question but did you check them with the handbrake still on

Back plate is thin metal and will need replacing depending on what state they are in.
:ok

My brakes were absolutely seized solid.
There was no way my drum was letting go.

Ended up tearing the back plate off the rear nearside.

BUT that was after the van had been stood for 29 years.

Believe me they need cutting off, no lump hammer is working with these, the handbrake is binding which doesn’t help

The remedy here is usually to wind off the toothed adjuster to collapse the brake shoes.

The drums may have a huge wear lip, and this is what gets caught up on the shoes.

As said though, my adjusters were seized, so no way to collapse down the shoes.
