Gearbox check over

Hi,
I’ve been part of this forum for a while, but just reading as much as I can find…..not much of poster, but need some advice.

I have a Type 4 CU 2.0… which I believe are the early 091 gearboxes, and am on a quest to make sure my camper is break down free (I’m trying to find the golden unicorn!!!) 😂.

Whilst I don’t seem to have an issues with the gearbox, I’m tempted to get it looked at and overhauled.

It’s don’t just short of 100,000 miles so far.

Whilst changing the gearbox oil last year, noticed some metal filings on the plug, but nothing big and nasty.

I’ve been searching and found this guy -
https://thevwgearboxshop.co.uk/

All looks good on his website, but cannot see to find anyone that’s used him, and nothings good or bad.

Gearbox teardown and rebuild will be just short of £800, obviously dependant on what’s found.

Anyone used him?

The gearbox thats goes with the 2 ltr Aircooled is one of the strongest ones, a build up of magnet fillings is normal, how many miles do you do in a year ?

Probably about 2-3000 per year.

I think it’s more piece of mind and hopefullly one Less thing to worry about.

I’d rather pay that sort of money, than cut a holiday short for the kids due to it breaking down on the way for a trip.

Have you used them before?

He has offered to take lots of photos of the service to my gearbox.

Are those 5 speed gearboxes he has advertised for £900 an outright sale, with no exchange?

At the moment the 3-4 gear slider for the early 091 isnt available new anywhere world wide, it may be reproduced in the future , if your gearbox is trouble free and doesnt make any noises perhaps leave it for now, i would be more concerned with the condition of the clutch and the clutch operating arm .

Thanks.

Can’t believe no one here seems to have used him… looks like plenty of boxes on his website.

I installed a new clutch about 2 years ago…. Wish I’d have installed a new seal on the gearbox side but didn’t have the time (off camping and didn’t have gearbox oil at the time)….school boy error.

Done the brake master cylinder, but have the clutch slave cylinder to do shortly.

The arm seemed ok last time I did the clutch.

That's what I was thinking/asking myself too. I suspect that's the cost to refurb one you take in.
