Has anybody got any experience in swapping a complete wiring loom from a late van (89 caravelle) into an early Van ( 83 Devon).
I have acquired a rotten 1989 caravelle parts van, which has Central locking, rev counter and the more modern fusebox. My 1983 devon campers loom is a little butchered here and there and the fusebox is looking past it's best.
I'd like to swap in the central locking etc for a few more creature comforts. Just wondering if anyone had any words of wisdom, or could point out any potential problems. Thanks!

Ive swapped my early fusebox and loom to a late. It's simple enough to do. As for central locking, aren't we fancy  . It's simple enough to remove and see how it went on then just replicate that on your van.

Thanks Stesaw! That's good to hear! Did you have to enlarge any of the bulkhead wiring holes I'm sure I read something on one of my Google searches that there wiring loom grommet is bigger on later? May be dreaming it ?

I am in the throws of rebuilding my 1983 van.

I have completely re-vamped all the wiring to 1987 wiring diagrams with a CE1 fusebox.

This is part of my desire to update the wiring for mod-cons and for a planned 1987 DJ injection engine.

The main front to back loom carries a lot more wiring, or so it seems, and therefore uses a bigger grommet.

I didn't realise this until I tried to fit the loom to my van.
I had to open the hole up to about 50mm diameter.
Although I think 48mm would have been better.

I think the original hole was about 30 or 32mm diameter.

The loom I fitted was an original 1987 loom, that I simply cleaned and repaired.
The grommet was also original, and still attached to the donor loom.

Thanks for the reply robsey, thats a great help. I'll be sure to enlarge that hole before I get the van painted. I assume everything else kind of fits? Fuse box bolts up etc?

I would check your own loom grommet diameter first,
But yes, everything else simply bolts into place.

Make a note of which loom goes through which hole in the bulkhead.
There were about five on my van.
Which was very confusing as I ripped all my 1983 wiring out at least five years before I started fitting my 1987 looms.

After retrospectively looking at the early torpedo fusebox wiring, I was amazed how clean and simple it was.
A lot more direct and organised than the later CE1 fusebox.

It's amazing how complicated the ce1 fusebox looks in comparison.....
