Oil pressure, what is going on

Well hi all :ok

Any thoughts on what is causing my probs?

It's a 1.9DG water cooled petrol that started a series of oil leaks. Each leak was fixed in turn and there were several of them!

The crank oil seal, the rocker covers, the water pump, the dip stick, the oil filter, and the filler tube. Oil breather tube. Probably forgotten some as well.

Well when all of the leaks were fixed oil it started coming out of the breather tube hose so I took the filler cap off and ran it but it pushed all of the oil out of the tube? :run

sounds like maybe pressurised crank case so I think that means ring(s) are shot and you are getting products of combustion blow by -  diagnostic is leak down test I think but other much more knowledgeable peeps will be along to advise, I may well be wrong

Thanks Aidan.

I fear you may be right but what is a "leak down test"?

I think Aiden is bang on there. But my 2l CU suffers with crankcase pressure, but passes leak down tests at TDC with flying colours. I suspect a little off TDC could tell a different story.

As Aidan said sounds like rings, if the engine is original it's more than likely due a refresh or replacement as it's going to be tired.
You could get away with redoing the rings and seals but opening up one of these engines can lead to issues with headstuds for one. :run

Well I have been offered a low milage 1.9 to replace mine but it seems a tad on the expensive side at £1100 does any one have any idea as to what a so called good one is worth?

Option A: You could lap the valves, put new rings on £13.38 and get a new gasket set £126.66 in there, doing it yourself and refresh your existing engine. A top end rebuild.

Option B: If you want top & bottom guaranteed to be good, I’d send it to Andrew @ Campershack (Isle of Arran, Scotland). Andrew has  engines on the shelf, ready to exchange I believe.

Option C: VW Engine Company (Kent) will sell you a refurbished 1.9 DG for £3.5k, but you may as well upgrade to the 2.1 DJ for £3.8k. I only mention this company as they also offer a drive-in, drive-out service which takes 8 days; but I've no idea what that would set you back, lots I imagine.

Option D: Buying second hand engines; who knows what you're going to get. High risk. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you buy a pup that is worse that the one you took out.

In summary, I like the idea of doing it yourself, best way to learn. Other than that, speak to Andrew. If you win the lottery option C.

Dont go for option C. PM me if you want to know why.

£3.5k barely covers the cost of alll new parts, never mind the labour to assemble a wbx.
Where do they find their NLA camshafts?
