JX crankshaft locking

Hello,
This is my first post. I'm sorry it's a newbie question but I have looked all over the internet, and I am struggling to find, with any confidence, a tool for locking the crankshaft of my JX engine, so I can remove the crank nose bolt.
I have tried the 'put it in gear method' but the bolt is so tight I cannot get it undone, even with a decent sized breaker bar.
So, my plan is to resort to a torque multiplier, which I have access to, but I expect the 'put it in gear' method will wind up too much to usefully use the torque multiplier...

So, in short, my question is, is there a specific crank locking tool, and if so, where can I get it from?

Many thanks
Steve.

Stick something against the flywheel teeth, why are you removing the bolt?

Hello,

Thanks for the quick reply.

I am removing the bolt to change the cam belt.

Regards
Steve.

crowbar/prybar in through the inspection hole in the bell housing..

but you are relying on the belt to hold the cam/crank...

I've never had an issue doing it this way but if the cam/crank skips teeth then you will be in trouble.

You don't need to remove the big bolt to change the cam belt. There are four cap head Allen screws holding the pulley onto the crank sprocket. Remove those and the pulley, leaving the sprocket in place. It is advisable to clean out the heads of the bolts and make sure the hex bit is well seated in the holes. If you round off the holes you're in real trouble. I use a hex bit held in a 10mm ring spanner as it's the only tool I can get between the exhaust and the pulley to remove the bolts. You may have to remove the exhaust to make room. When you tighten the bolts up make sure you do them up to spec. I can't remember the spec at the moment, but it really is tighter than you'd expect.

Thanks mrhutch,

I'll bear that in mind, for if I do get stuck.

It seems this wasn't such a newbie question after all   :)
Maybe I'll petition Brickwerks to get a proper tool made!

Thanks for your help.

Thanks colinthefox,

Maybe I am being thick then.
I have removed one vee-belt pulley by removing the 4 cap screws but as far as I can see the lower cam belt cover remains trapped behind a second vee-belt pulley that is integral with the crank pulley.
My van has PAS, so I don't know if that is why there is a difference?

The other v belt pulley should come off as well ,having removed the 4 bolts. maybe it’s stuck with a bit of rust or something.

This is the type of tool to hold the crank while doing the big central bolt but you won’t be needing or wanting to do that!Image

If you're changing the belt, dont you just loosen the tensioner to take it off? But you need to make sure you lock the pump/cam and crank in place.

The toothed timing belt pulley is separate to the v belt pulleys. The central bolt holds the toothed timing belt pulley to the crankshaft it has 4 threaded m8 holes for the v pulley bolts .

Good morning,

Thank you all for your help.

I've been out this morning and given the pulley a seeing to with a large hammer... it didn't budge but I didn't spend much time on it as needed to come to work. I'm happy to take your words for it, so I'll have a more concerted effort at the weekend (no garage for me).

Thanks again

Steve.

Picture of the 2 pulleys. (Socket set handle holding them upright for photo)The outer double v pulley mostly covers the other v pulley. The pulley you are having trouble removing incorporates a rubber damping part so i guess you need to be reasonably gentle with it. I don’t understand why yours is stuck ,mine fell away easily ! The v pulley has a clearance hole in the middle that sits over the central bolt head.Image
