Stub axle / hub splines worn ?

My T25 1979 failed its mot because of slight play in the rear offside wheel... the garage said it aas bearings. Having replaced them it is exactly the same so I suspect play in the splines ... has anyone else had this experience?
This is my first post !
Cheers

Is your MOT person aware there should be slight movement from side to side and top to bottom on the rear wheels of these vans?

I don't know !
Thanks for replying.
It's certainly very annoying particularly having replaced parts and spent time and money on something which didn't need doing.
I didn't think they were worn as the wheel rotated smoothly .. no horrible noises...
I am still wondering about the splines though because there's more play in the offside rear compared with the nearside.

if the nuts are tight then you won't have any play evident in the splines; the inner is a C3 grind annular ball bearing, there's no taper bearing, designed to run hot so do 20 mile trip on way to MOT retest and have them checked straight away; a small amount of play with hands in the 6 and 12 position and weight of wheel is normal, no noise no grinding no major play in the 3 and 9 position;
quality of bearings matters and the state of bearing carrier and use of bearing fit all contribute to secure fitment and low play; worn bearing carrier won't be fixed by new bearings
