Hi folks - first post. I've just bought a 1980 2l petrol Aircooled and nervous about the guzzling.

In truth i don't do many miles (3000 a year) but compared to the 52 mpg i get on my seat altea xl my plan of swapping the mundano for something alive is starting to look not very environmentally conscious.

I looked into LPG conversion, concerned at loss of power. There doesn't appear to any other options for engine upgrade given its Aircooled. I may just put up with it but does anyone have any advice?

Lpg probably isnt a option for Aircooled any longer , unless you can do the conversion your self , but the loss of power thing is a myth , you can set the open loop system to give you just as much power as petrol. It’s a flat four not a inline engine !!!

As for mpg, you are only going to get a average 15mpg with a CU, no matter what wild claims some will come up with .

I have just spoken to Lee at https://t2five.com/ in Loughborough and he can do the LPG conversion. But he's very busy at the moment.
 

It’s not a matter of the price of the conversion, its more that the Aircooled option of heating the vaporiser is not COP11 compliant.
Making it very difficult to get it certified

Would it not be possible to heat the vaporiser with hot engine oil diverted from the filter with a sandwich plate?

Strange how we get to my daughters in Wales without filling up and have almost a quarter of a tank full after nearly 250 miles? Must be getting close on 25 to the gallon

Yes, thats nearer 30 mpg ….. always exceptions to the rule

I have been consistently getting between 9.5 to 10.5 L per 100km on my 2.0 CU engine after the rebuild.

Have been using millers VsPE power plus also and really notice the difference.

As always driving style is the key factor no matter what car you drive regarding MPG

Sounds good to me.

It is I’m well pleased.

Constantly check tyre pressures before any trips and take it easy on the roads.

It’s no diesel but I have a real live for the Aircooled engines!

Just throwing in my 2 eurocents worth..

The mpg will vary with each vehicle and driving style.

If you keep the weight down, the (standard dimension) tyres well pumped up, running on 98RON and Solex carb(s)..

I would expect between 21 and 24 mpg for a CU, and 24 to 28 mpg for a CT.

A bit less with E10..

We normally get 17mpg from our CU with twin Weber's. That is local driving around the Isle of Wight. A recent trip to France, doing a steady 55 - 60mph saw it rise up to a rough 25mpg.

Our 1Y can give 40mpg. Just saying.
