Fuel Injectors DJ MV SS.

I guess they all run the same petrol injectors?

Through the seller motormanfuelinjector on eBay.com l bought a set of refurbished injectors with new seals from the US in March this year.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/293119879400 ... Sw3bNdAm~C

They have been on the shelf inside my garage until today. So decided to swap out the old and in with the new.

To my surprise l found they are not exact replacements. They are shorter. So when mounted to the fixing plate and bolted to the inlet manifold they are loose and can be rattled back and forth.

Old on the left. New on right. Shorter by 5mm

Close. But no cigar!

On contacting the seller he claims they are direct replacements for the 2.1 vanagon and never had any problems like this before. Same injectors for DJ or MV or SS apparently.

He then suggests using two seals on the pintle. Old one first and then the new seal. I
I replied surely this could be dangerous as it reduces how deep the the injector sits inside the manifold to about 5mm instead of a healthy 10mm.

His answer....

"I don't see any difference in length between the two injectors.
you can remove the lower grommet from your original injector and place it on the new injector, then the new grommet
this will move the grommet down deeper into the port.
if the grommet doesn't seal properly in the port then a vacuum leak will occur"......................and........................................ "The small distance will have no effect on compression or power generated. Since the amount of air, fuel, and displacement is unchanged. Once again, fuel cannot escape the port because of the vacuum created during the intake cycle. "

I have deep reservations using the set up he suggests.

Your views please?

Regards
Stuart

Have you posted this on the samba Stu? As they will be his main market and will no doubt had the same problem as yourself. TBH the new ones do appear to be shorter than the originals. Have you measured the length?

Good idea, Rob!

I may have come up with a solution, though.

On further measuring today l found the injectors are equal length. But where the clamp sits above the big seal is in a different position. Note where small seal sits. See photo....

Also the fuel pipes cannot be assured of being 100% ethanol resistant. So l swapped out with some spare Brickwerks supplied fuel hose. Getting them over the non-barb'd posts were another story!

Anyhow, l found a spare pushrod seal and it fits perfectly between clamp and top seal. This in turn will push the pintle further into the manifold when clamped down.

Will test later today.

Stuart

Looks like a slightly different profile ( more tapered ) than originals too.
I wonder if they are for a different car really, and they have sold them as a "viable" replacement?

I didnt expect genuine Bosch refurbs for £130.00 plus 30 quid postage. But the advert on eBay does read direct Vanagon replacements without any modification. Plug and play fitting. Which is not true.

I drove for about 40 miles and there is definately an improvement in starting, idle and running, cold or hot. It normally takes about 3-5 crank revolutions to fire. Now it's more like a modern car. Almost instant.

Im not happy l needed to make a small modification using a pushrod seal under the clamp to get proper fitment. Plus l was concerned that the supplied fuel pipes may not be ethanol resistant. So swapped out as mentioned above. But each injector came with new big and small seal, a proper fuel clip and about 60mm of fuel pipe.

Initial start-up saw me place a big pale of water beside the engine bay.

Stay tuned for a roman candle finale. :rofl

also used on a number of 6 cyl US Market cars, readily available relatively cheap aftermarket, worth knowing they are similar to ours

My concern is how long are they going to last? Or, more importantly perhaps, if of dubious build, are they going to leak?
I have a good nose!
