the van started struggling on the way home from work and stalled whenever i dipped the clutch at the junction, i got it back onto the drive as its only a few hundred yards but now it will start but not run.

if i start it and rev it it keeps going but in a very even rev-die-rev pattern and cuts out as soon as i let off the gas.

please give me some advise on what to check for first.

petrol or diesel?

any smoke and what colour if there is any?

check oil and water levels.

its a 1.9dg petrol, no smoke, coolant and oil levels look fine but need to check properly when engine has cooled. 1/2 tank of fuel but might chuck a gallon in just in case when i get the car back to fetch some later.

check the petrol and the air filter
also the vac pipes

sounds like a fueling problem , to much or to little ??
possible choke stuck or damaged, try it cold if it runs better cold then check out the auto choke on side of carb,
if its harder to start cold then possible air leak, ie a pipe burst or come off intake manifold letting air in ,

hard to say over the puter but this should give you a starting point

my 1.9 petrol did exactly what you are describing, it turned out to be a coked up carb, start it up with the air cleaner/filter off and get someone to rev it while you squirt carb cleaner into the carb, you need to fire it in every jet/pipe you can, the tick over will need adjusting after though if it is this, if this doesnt work for you check the amplifier module on the near side rear engine side...

May be dirt in carb jet/s. Also check wire to fuel cut-off valve on carb (and then check cut-off valve).

ok, cant see anything obvious but got a feeling i may have fallen victim to a sticking fuel gague as the fuel filter seems to have alot of air in it.
will put a gallon of petrol in and see if that cures it when wendy brings the car home.

ok, plenty of fuel in tank and no improvement.

if you hold the gas on steady to keep it going the engine revs on and off as though you were pumping the pedal.

have you only got the one fuel filter, by the tank outlet?
if you have one in the engine bay, you shouldnt.

Change the filter ( Pence) and check the carb for crap.....

if its not that i'd say its the diaphram in the pump........

carb cleaner £3, get it in there, blocked jet!

did you over rev it before it started doing this? only ask as i read somewhere that rev limiter can stick so if its fitted with one it could be that?

Could also be a perforated fuel hose between tank and filter or pump.

if possible try and get it on a run for about 15 minutes and see if it can idle then, this is the same problem I have with mine, currently I have pulled the vac hose off of the air direction thingy and it appears to have cured the problem (fingers crossed)...

mine was stalling when I dipped the clutch changing gears then bump started itself straight after, and needed a handbrake and revs at junctions to start it dying... but once it was properly warm it was fine...


another test would be to unclip and lift the air cleaner lid so there is no suction pressure, as mine seemed to be starving of air when it was cold.

Not been buying fuel at tesco i hope!
