5 speed question

I’ve done a search but can’t really find the answer.

I’ve had a couple of t25’s in the past both were 4 speed so this one is a 5 speed.
Obviously a dog leg first… but the question on this van I have push down like you do with reverse to select first.. then when I need second I have to throw the lever to neutral then all the way over the other side I hear the audible click then I can select second… I’m going to take a stab in the dark and say that it’s not normal? 😂

If it’s not… is it just a case of following the threads on re setting the selector?

Definitely not normal.
A good place to start would be to check the linkage setting and also the bushes and universal joint for wear.
If they are worn, Brickwerks do a replacement kit.
There are also You tube videos for this.
If you still aren’t happy, there is an option of buying an 025 motorsport gear lever modification. Highly recommended as it transforms the van!

On the 5spd if you select the 1st-reverse plane, you push against a spring tensioned plunger on the lever itself.
There should be a plastic bellow and dust cap on it.
With time it disintegrates, the grease stiffens and the plunger is sticking.
IMO you hear the plunger popping out.
You should not press the lever downwards just in reverse, so something fishy going on.
Remove the spare wheel and take some photos of the lever.
The Wiki has some good info:

That sounds very much like your van may have a 4sp linkage installed. Can you post a picture from below, it will above the spare wheel.

The LLE had only the 5 speed gearbox  petrol or diesel.

Mine was a 5 speed box with 4 speed linkage when I bought it.
It was excessively loose, and selecting gears was a fine art.

They had cut something out of the selector box under the floor where the gearstick feeds through the cab floor.

Perhaps they cut that out to prevent the need to push down while selecting first gear?

Thanks for all the replies..

I tried to get out there today to start investigating but a young family once again took over.

I’ll try again tomorrow and also get some photos of what I find.

Yes unless I push my way down and across it’s like I have a 4 speed to be honest

Specifically capture a pic of the shift box bit under the van, directly below the gearstick.
You need the angle to be looking in from the perspective of looking toward the front of the van, from underneath approx where your seats are.

With that view it will be easy to identify a 5sp from 4sp shift set-up.
If it is a 5 sp, it either needs adjusting, or something is bent etc.
