DJ heads on a DG engine

Is this possible? I have an option on a DG block and a set of DJ heads, I was thinking of marrying them up? ALL the part numbers seem to tally, is it a different cylinder barrel length that gives the extra CC?

It is the pistons and liners that give the increase in engine size.
The heads should fit fine, it is only the DF heads that are different.

Not quite correct info, I'm afraid. It's the crank stroke that gives the increase in engine size. The shorter pistons are a result of this, and the barrels are identical. Camshafts also play a big part in the performance difference.
There are four types of heads. DF (small valves & inlet ports), early DG (smaller combustion chamber, no suffix letter on part number), late WBX for all variants (most common) and 2.1 AMC version (enlarged inlet ports). So basically genuine VW DJ and later DG heads are the same.
Putting late heads (from a DJ) onto an early DG will give a slightly reduced compression ratio, and a nominal reduction in power.
