Whats the quickest way of sourcing a diesel engine ?

Im driving 250 miles a week in the van. I live in it for 3 nights while working away from home.
The engine has just started making a knocking noise - doesnt look good!
I intend to carry on using it, and when it does give up the ghost i want to change the engine as fast as possible.
I would love to slap in an AAZ - but i havent got time to do a conversion. Does anyone know how long it takes a proffessional to take a 1.7d out and replace it with an AAZ ? I wont have any of the required ancilaries ie jx manifold that normally come of the 1.6td.
Other than that, i might have to just replace it with a 1.7d (boring but easy)
I've been quoted £1500 for replacement reconditioned (Elite VW) engine but im not sure of the quality of the reconditioned unit.
I've been quoted near enough the same for a VEGE 1.7d reconditioned/rebuilt engine - engine only. I've heard good things about VEGE engines - am i correct in thinking this ?
I'd appreciate a bit of advice really. Sat here on me tod not really knowing what to do.
Is it worth going for an AAZ ? Is it easy enough to get someone to do the conversion ?
Shall i just stick with a 1.7d ? If so is it worth the extra cash and going VEGE ?

There are a number of VW based cars out there using 1.9 non turbo engines.
I think that would be the way I would prefere to go.
Keep it simple.
Reading reports on here - the AAZ engines have problems.
The TDI engines produce too much power and the gearbox struggles.
I'd be happy with a little more power but to maintain the economy.

Simply....
AAZ is a VW engine code for a 1.9td engine.
VEGE are a company who recon engines.

The AAZ has a problem with a pulley, as long as its replaced every cam belt change the engine will out last a tdi.
The tdi's power and torque is higher than the AAZ but not by much, they have poor performance in t3's due to the fact they won't rev and the gear ratios are not suitable. Rotatory pump tdi's are over rated, yes they are more refined and economical, but they won't rev, they develop running problems by 80k which is difficult to fix if you don't have the know how or tools, or money, some of the sensors are exspensive and fail on a regualr basis.
The non turbo 1.9 also has the same problem the AAZ has.

VEGE - pronounced vagay apparently is a Belgian company with an outfit in Chesterfield. The bloke on the phone couldn't even attempt the Begian pronounciation!
I've started looking at cars on autotrader with 1.9d engines -but im not sure if they are the right ones to go for. Pointers appreciated!
I've been looking at passats and golfs around the mid 1990's. Obviously they are all fairly high mileage.
Interesting about the 1.9na. I wonder if they are worth considering....

I recently enquired about the same as my last van was running the ky series 17d and i pondered about changing it when i picked up a 1900na polo and immediatly noticed how much smoother the engine ran.
I priced up engines and td's are much more expensive.You can sourse a good 19na seat /vw diesal lump for £50-100 if you shop around locally. We picked one up with all the running gear for £80 with 50k on the clock from a local breaker!.TD's on the web go for £500 na's for £250 so i would always hunt around locally first !.

I payed nearer the top end of the scale for my AAZ from Futbus but he pre preped it to go and fited shiney new stuff for the price. We started undoing the first bolt at about 10:30, at just after 16:00 the same day we turned the key and it fired up.
I had a top team but apart from Futbus you couldn't call us proffesionals.

yo dudes,i bought a golf 1.9n/a diesel engine and gearbox off fleabay for £140 delivered with a 3 month warranty,used it to replace the knackered 1.6n/a,easiest conversion in the world!!!,except for the fact that i had the crappiest gearbox ratio in existance,so had to swap the box,£50 off fleabay also...............crap loads to the gallon,and a y reg camper with an l reg engine..............................

I'm running a 1z TDI motor in mine out of an Audi 80 was a DG1.9 using the original 5 speed box will cruise at 70mph and still return 40 mpg luv it put a shout out for Phillippaccman he's the man to speak to

I have a AAZ umwelt 1.9td, bought a golf of ebay 300 quid m reg, Phillippacman took engine out and took my 1.9 DG out of my van and fitted the diesel.
Very happy with results I can recommend Phil top top geezer
