Dash flexible PCB replacement, my own design

My dash was doing weird stuff which led me down a rabbit Warren.......

I first looked at swapping some components but not many were available. Then I thought maybe some broken traces but every thing I looked at just showed age and compromise.

Steps so far:
Did some measurements and created a super simple board to test fitment and if my idea would work (FIRST BOARD)
Chose all components and completed a full board (2ND BOARD) it worked but was ugly and my OCD wasnt happy
Moved everything around and chose black, picked some less bright LEDs much more happy

Most of the VW side connectors i have had to 3d print as they dont make connectors with the same pitch any more.
All components are actively still being made and much better versions of the originals
I chose to use different pin outs on all board connectors so they cant br installed wrong.

I went through all these steps as i didnt want to spend a fortune on one of the off the shelf replacements, even though i have spent a bit of time on this and bought loads of components i am still under the spend of one of the branded kits. I can probably create these for sensible money now or even provide them in kit form for DIYers

Just wanted to share with the forum as i am quite happy with my progress and i really think the next version might be the one i am finally happy with :-)

Awesome work- I'm sure these will go down very well once you've got it all sussed for the variants. I have one of chj's kits running (bought as a DIY kit a few years ago), sadly nla. It was a great project to put together, good value and v satisfying. Great to see another DIY kit on the cards keep going!

Just so everyone knows, I am working on a replacement foil for 86+. I will be testing on several vehicles in the next 2 weeks. I want  this to be the lowest cost solution to the other products out there.

If there is enough interest, I may do other years / combinations

I am not having any luck posting a photo.

That looks fantastic! Didn't even think about using modern film/foil stuff

I too have designed for1/2 standard models and see if there is need for more
