Hi -

I’ve been having an issue with with breaking down after short runs and struggling to restart. Spark present, no issue with ignition coil resistance, relatively new amplifier and hall sender. Checked those as assumed it was a problem with hot start. It fires up and runs fine until i stop. Ok starting again but then stops after a short run. I had someone replace the fuel lines recently and I’ve just checked the work as assuming it must be fuel starvation given the electric side all seems ok. The kit was from brickwerks and included the non return valve on the return feed.

The idiot has put the filter on the wrong way around and also put the non return valve on the feed line to the carb.

I took off the fuel line to the inlet on the pump and it was quite pressurised with air hissing out.

Is this likely the cause of my problems? (Seems obvious place to start to correct that) but wanted to know if anyone can speak into the symptoms matching the horrific work done by the guy installing the fuel lines.

FFS! Yes, turn the filter round and remove the non return valve from the pump intake line
And find a competent mechanic

The mechanical fuel pump sucks , and is a diaphragm pump, so it is a non return valve by design

It’s the first bit of paid work I’ve had done outside MOT stuff. Just assumed a simple job like that would have been straight forward. Cost me a lot of time scratching my head and breaking down tho. Will stick to YouTube and this forum in future

I recently re-located my filter from the engine bay to near the fuel tank and replaced the fuel lines at the same time. I was aware of the filter needing to point the correct way, i asked advice from another shopper at the outlet, and he said where the filter narrows this should point towards the pump. Back at my house I took a closer look at the filter and could see the arrow marks, they were pointing in the opposite direction to what i was earlier advised.

Wow! FYI: the majority of the fuel line is plastic pipe too, not rubber hose. I appreciate the Brickwerks kit is out of stock, but the beauty of that is - it's already made up, which makes it very difficult to get the installation wrong. Although I bet your mechanic could.

He did - I purchased the feed and return line kit from Brickwerks….

Just sorting this. My engine bay hose on the feed line is a little short. Is it ok to have a few inches of the small diameter polyamide piping or should I attach a longer hose so there is no polyamide pipe showing beyond the bulkhead grommet?

I think for safety reasons the connection should be external of the engine bay. I recently did mine, bit more. Difficult but got there. I think although similar to yours, my connection with a jubilee clip was further along so the rubber piping was through the grommet not the plastic pipe like yours.

Thanks Tony - that was my gut feeling hence the Q. I’ll get a longer piece of hose
