Cruise speed and dots on speedo

I’ve had my ‘83 1.9 Aircooled T25 for two years. Was wondering what sort of speed is normal for cruising on the motorway. 55-60mph seems comfortable for my van although the revs sound high, and that it’s gasping for a 5th gear to drop in to. When I first got the van my mechanic told me not to go over 50, am I pushing my luck or is 60mph a normal speed to be doing? Also wondered if anyone knows what the dots mean on the speedo? There is one at just below 20mph, two just below 35mph and three just below 55mph. Cheers!

1.9 Aircooled? Do you mean 2.0? 55-60 is fine

One dot first gear, two dots second gear, three dots... Mind you, a bit of mechanical empathy kicks in before getting anywhere near the dots in my world 8)

The engine sounds like it’s going to explode at 55mph in 4th, let alone 3rd! 😂

I fitted a small rev counter to see what was happening. Standard 2.0 cu and gearbox showed 20mph/1000revs. 3000 at 60mph isn't too bad. I usually sit at or slightly above 60 on motorways, mostly to avoid holding up lorries.
