Advice needed - Engine cutting out at idle until warm

Hello,
I am looking for some advice with an issue we’re having with our 1983, manual, petrol van.
Until the van is warm (about 20 minutes) the engine cuts out at idle. We initially had this down to a damaged air inlet pipe but this has been replaced and we’re still experiencing the same problem.
Would love to know if there’s anything that I could do to rectify this before taking to the garage.
Really appreciate any advice given.
Thanks.

If not air flow or filter, is the choke working? What engine is it? Injection or not

Sorry for the delayed response, I didn’t get a notification. Thanks for your reply.
It seems the auto choke is working as when I start the van up I can leave it running, it stalls after the first time I’ve touched the accelerator. And then continues to do this for the next 20 or so minutes until the van is warm.
It’s a 1984, 1.9l water-cooled.
Thanks

Do you have a Haynes or Bentley manual to look at?
Assuming there are no air or vaccum pipe leaks...
I don't know your level of confidence or experience with mechanics, but if you are happy to have a go -
I would say look at one of those manuals and look at checking all the basic settings on the carburettor.
Adjust the settings as described in the manual, in the order that they are written.
It helps to know if you have a Pierburg 2e3 (DG engine code) or
a Solex Pict 5 (DF engine) carburettor.
If you are not confident or you are unsure, then entrust the work to a proper "old fashioned" garage that still remembers age-old concepts like carburettors, plugs points and condensors. Not one of these modern parts-swapping electronic diagnostic establishments.
Look at this website here -
There is a link for VW manuals for the carburettors.
https://syncrosport.com/info/manual/
Download from the link.
It should give you all the info you need.
(Or any prospective garage).
