The wiki confirms my recollection from years ago that only the VW additive is recommended for water boxer engines because of the cylinder head bolts passing through the water jacket.

But what about the diesel engines? Do they have similar problems? Is 'ordinary antifreeze' OK for them or should one stick to G12+?

Unless you can get g12+ at a reasonable price just put any decent brand coolant in, the diesels are not critical with coolant.
