Intermittent Engine Stuttering

I have a 1988 1.9ltr petrol T25. In the last year its been developing this fault where it would start jump and skip when on long journeys. Usually when on a motorway going up hill, even if im going less than 50mph. But it will drive completely fine around town even when cold and after not being driven all week.

I've rebuilt the carb, replaced the fuel filter and countless other things and it still happened. Eventually i replaced the vacuum hose to the choke pull odwn unit to one without the small filter bit inside and this seemed to fix the problem while i went on a 2hour drive... until the way back when it started stuttering again.

When i got home i noticed the choke pull down unit had completely stopped worked so i replaced it and thought that the issue must have been solved!.. But this weekend it started sputtering 20 minutes from home, i pulled over and gave everything a fiddle and it worked fine again for the rest of the journey, even going up steep country roads. Until the next day it got so bad i had to be towed home.

I have no idea what could be the issue, and the fact that its intermitted its very frustrating, and I am supposed to be going on a 4000 mile round trip around Europe in 2 months..

Does anything have any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you’ve covered all the fuel/air bases. So start looking at the ignition side. Rotor Arm ok, distributor cap, HT leads should measure 6000 ohms per foot and while you’ve got the multi meter out check the coil primary & secondary.

As above, i had a similar problem some time back on another vehicle, the distributer was loose after a home mechanic did the timing and forgot to tighten it up properly.

Are you sure there's no water in the fuel tank? I've seen similar symptoms when the front breather or filler pipes are split. If there's any doubt, pop a bottle of Wynns dry fuel in.

My van is doing the exact same thing. I've just stripped down the carb ready for a rebuild and noticed there was no vacuum in the choke pull down.

I've opened it up and the diagram is torn.

I'm hoping this is the issue!

Only problem now is that no one has a replacement part in stock :(

I've noticed people have said that a 2e2 pull down can be used? Any advise on this would be very welcome

Just checked stock and, as you say, both Brickwerks and Heritage are out of stock. However I noticed something startling - the difference between prices:
Heritage £99.95
Brickwerks £6.77

I rebuilt my 2e3 carb last week and also had to buy a choke pull down, the expensive ones are single port like the original, cheaper ones have two ports, one of which you have to block up (believe brickworks do this for you when they are in stock). I just used a short offcut of the new tube with a screw in the end to block it.

Anyway I bought mine from here:
https://www.veedubmachine.co.uk/carbure ... 0-100.html

Part number is correct even if the description is a bit confusing.

It fitted just fine, carb back on the band working well so far

Even so, a hundred quid from heritage?!
And the one in Spain is the Brosal single port unit, and is €31. Heritage should be ashamed of themselves.
