I am replacing the fuel tank breathers etc on a friends 1980 2.0l air cooled van. It has a hose connected to the tank nearside inlet becoming from the engine compartment but once in the engine bay it just has a screw plugging the end. They have what looks like a single pieberg carb. Should hlthe hose connect somewhere or shall I just leave it blanked off. I recently did the same job on my 2.0l air-cooled with twin Silex and mine has no return hose fitted. Under what configurations should there be a return hose, and where does it connect ?

My mistake, I think it's got a single Weber carb conversion. How does that affect the fuel return hose and crank case breather ? In this case the fuel return is blanked off and the crank case breather just has an open pipe going down behind the tinware. Is that how it should be ?
