Diesel Starter Motors - compatibility ?

Hi
Will a starter motor from a 1982 1.6 diesel engine fit a 1987 1.7 diesel engine ?
Suppliers show just two different part number for all diesels 1981-84 then 1984-1992 but i need to find out if I can fit an earlier one to a later model ?
Unless the bell housing changed then Im hoping that whatever the differences between late and early starter motors are they are" fit-able" - between early and late ??
