Doh, what’s mistaka ta maka

Hi all,
Went out on Sunday in my 84 velle and she performed flawlessly, so much so that I gave her a stroke and said to the wif, she has behaved well!

Well, get in her today and now she will not idle at all, any junction just dies immediately. Runs absolutely fine going along but dip the clutch for more than a sec and she dies.

It’s a 1.9dg, with pierburg carb. Thinking it might be idle jet has some stuff in it, but what do I know? ….. nothing is what.

Has new battery, fully charged, nothing tampered with since Sunday when she ran fine.

Any clues? And if you think it might be idle jet can you point me in the right direction as to where it is and what to do.

Many thanks peeps

Oh, and she starts straight up on the turn of the key, or bump start (if I’m moving that is🤣)

Does this happen when hot and/or cold?

When I had issues with a Pierburg 2e3, back in the days of my 1987 Cavalier 1300 mk2, it happened usually when cold.

The cause was a faulty choke.
On these it is a bi-metallic coiled strip, which gets warm and unwinds turning the choke flap.

So - my recommendation.
1 - Check the set-up of the fast-idle and choke cams against their stops.
2 - I assume the rest of the carb is set up correctly as it worked perfectly yesterday. - otherwise I would go through a full set-up of float height, and clean all the little filters etc.
3 - Check the operation of thd bi-metallic strip in the choke unit.
If in any doubt, change it for a replacement, or fit a manual choke kit - if you can find one.

There should be an easily accessible guide for a 2e3 carburettor either in Haynes etc.

Plus you could check for a leak at the inlet manifold. This caused our van to suddenly start stalling at junctions etc.
Get an assistant to get in the engine bay with a can of wd40 or carb’ cleaner and spray it around the gasket when you let the revs drop, if there’s a leak the revs will pick up.

Check your fuel pipes, are they splitting?
Could have a bit of rubber stuck at the tiny filter mesh on entry to carb?

So a quick update, small piece of something (looked wooden?!) was blocking the idle jet as you can see from the pictures..
cleaned it all up and gave a liberal spray of carb cleaner and now idles as before  :ok ImageImageImage

I see what you did there.

That is a new one on me.
Good to see it is fixed.
