Hi all,

We bought this bottom hose from Brickwerks for our van, but on trying to install it there's an inner, hard support piece for the aux pump hose junction that interrupts with the front-to-back pipe, so it won't push over the pipe fully to secure on.

Having a look now at options, what I think is the equivalent from Heritage looks to be a different design with a longer stretch of uninterrupted hose to push on to the pipe, yet I can't see how this design will fit; the van needs a straight stretch to the pipe and 's' bend to thermostat, this hose either looks backwards or the aux pump take off is at the wrong end.

Can someone help please??? Need to get the van driving again to get it to the body shop a week on Monday!

so what year is your van, 2wd or Syncro, which engine is fitted ?, and put up some pics showing the original one that fitted and a comparison with the one you have to hand from Brickwerks

Apologies. It's an '88 JX 2WD. This is the new hose and set up. I'm afraid I don't have the old with me but will take a trip to the lockup to fetch it.

I wonder if other people who have fitted this hose have cut off the excess of the steel support piece in the plastic pipe (last pic)

The inner metal reinforcement to the plastic pipe rusts, and as it corrodes it expands, and forces its way out of the plastic pipe. Then it rusts through and you lose your coolant in a gush.

The long term solution is replacement stainless front-to-back coolant pipes from your trusted supplier.

At least, that’s my experience. It’s a bit pricey, but you get peace of mind.

Aren't you supposed to put the steel support piece inside the plastic pipe first before fitting the rubber?
Methinks you are just trying to force it in whilst it is inside the rubber!

Thanks Roger, I'll bear that in mind.

The metal supports do go into the plastic pipe ~ an inch, and both have roughly the same length sticking out of the pipe. I did think of trying to clean the exposed ends up and drive them further into the pipe but can't imagine it'd be successful so would rather not risk splitting the pipe and needing to replace them before my deadline.

As far as I know they should go in as far as the stop otherwise they are not acting as a support. That one appears to have been pulled out.

Give that metal end a few knocks with a Mallet and it will go back it , then fit the hose

Perfect, thanks. Will give it a try tomorrow. If one was out and the other was in I'd have guessed, but with both pulled out I assumed that was how they were meant to be despite the lack of reason.

Until I saw these images and the remedy by Aidan I thought these connections were a more moulded and permanent fixture, does this mean if the metal inserts are rotting and are caught early enough can they be replaced before it splits the plastic pipe.  I have a small leak in this area on my van which I need to look at. E D I T, just realised the area in question is at the rear of the pipes not where it connects to the front of the vehicle via a rubber hose to the radiator which is where my leak is.

I think there’s a metal insert at the front too?

That's what I thought, it's on my many tasks when weather get's better that I need to get around to.

Yes , the inserts were and maybe still are available separately

Thanks David, gives me another option if I go for a replacement part or the full lot if needed.

really ? they were moulded into the plastic when they were made actually providing the necessary rigidty and a form for the lip to be moulded onto, afaik; they rot from the inside, crack the plastic, weep coolant so people replace the original spring clips which are very specifically sized and use jubilees (which are slightly D shaped due to the mechanism so they still weep), squeeze them tighter and tighter till they break the plastic tube and the two parts separate; virtually all the original send pipes I have seen have suffered from this and a lot of the return pipes too, usually at the radiator end
