When turning over I have no fuel coming through to the engine bay through the feed pipe from the pump. In-line filter is also empty. Fuel runs from tank after a gentle suck on the hose. Is this normal or should it run freely I.e via gravity if I hold the hose down?
Haynes manual refers to servicing the mechanical pump and push rod, worth doing or just change the whole pump ?

As you may have noticed, the fuel pump is not in the most commodious of positions.

You will find it at 7 mins on here:



There is a filter screen under the dome cap. When was the filter at the exit from the fuel tank last changed.

It is advisable to change all the flexible fuel hoses and secure with pipe clips.

Hi Sarran thanks for the reply. The inline filter is new but the hoses are not. I will be changing the whole fuel lines eventually before road use, still just trying to get the engine running. Am I correct in assuming unless the pump is actually pumping then no fuel will leave the tank? Even to the filter ?
I plan to remove the pump and check it over, if the pump is faulty would you recommend to replace with an electric pump or another mechanical one. TIA

Fuel should run out of the tank if you pull the hose off, I would put more fuel in

Thanks davidoft. I will try putting more fuel in. There’s probably about a gallon and a half in the tank at the moment. Would this not be enough to run out of the tank freely ?
If adding more fuel doesn’t make it run out of the tank would this indicate a problem with the tank or breathers ?

I have put another 30 litres into the tank and fuel now flows freely and fills the filter. However still no fuel coming into carb feed pipe from pump. Does anyone know the size of the spline bolt it’s held on with. It’s not a bit I have to hand so need to source one.
Looks like the pump has been changed or serviced in the past as it has a different bolt in the bottom.

I can't tell you the bit size for the screws but it was a standard hi-torque one in my tool box set.

Are they really zip-ties used to secure the fuel hoses :0

Frankly the pump in the picture is more than somewhat crusty.

I know people love to fit electric fuel pumps, but I would not fit one without an impact shut off switch.
However a mechanical replacement is easily available at about 65 € retail.

I can´t help you with the spline socket size, as I am about 12000 km from my workshop..
but I would recommend using socket cap bolts with Allen heads, as it makes access so much easier.

Please use new flexible piping and proper hose clips.

If the rest of the engine is as dirty as this, I would suggest an engine removal and clean project..

Clean Air-Cooled engine = Happy Engine.

Thanks for all your replies. I have removed the fuel pump and push rod. The pump is functional when I operate it by hand when connected to the fuel feed. However the push rod looks very suspect!

I have a new pump push rod for sale if you need one.

I’m confused as to what the mangled rubbery thing that is slid onto the push rod is, and why the pump end is corroded like it is

It looks like someone has tried to make a seal to stop oil getting to the pump for some reason.

Any idea why this would be done ?

My thoughts is that there is/was excessive crankcase pressure forcing oil out through the pump. Someone who knows these engines better than me will comment, I should think.
