Exhaust Conumdrum

VW T3 1990 1.9l Petrol
Hi Does anyone know why my exhaust has 2 cut off bits on it? Its on the right hand side of the engine underneath the air filter.
Looks strange and not sure if something has been removed.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Taking a guess without pictures, but they could be there for the corrugated piping to be attached to. They are there to introduce warm air into the air box for various functions. See 2 and 3 in image.

Thanks very much. Still a bit puzzling but I will look into what the various functions are and how to connect it up.

Just seen your images which just appeared, where has your air box gone all I can see is the vaccuum pipes that connect to it. Sri just realised you took it off to show area. DOH
