Worn gearbox input shaft bearing.

Now I realise there is a little play in the shaft when it's not supported by the bearing in the crankshaft.
But I have too much.
My recent breakdown in Spain was a due to the clutch mechanism (throw bearing, seal and collar) being trashed.
The mechanics replaced the above items and we were back on the road.
He showed me the inner bearing and it was rattling about in the gearbox not touching the sides.
My question is this.
Would a new bearing need a sleeve making as I'm assuming the wear is the Aluminium bearing housing.

Secondly
Since fitting an AGG golf engine (new spigot bearing!)
I would like to change the 4th gear to a slightly lower ratio.
Just for motorway traveling.
Currently at 4000 rpm @ 70mph
I'd like it at 3500
I could do it with a tyre size increase, but I like the first three ratios.
So my question is..
Is it possible to retro fit a taller 4th in place of the original?
I have a pretty standard DG 4 sp box currently.
Thanks
Kev

if the case is worn I'd just replace it, if the shaft is damaged then Ian can repair it
yes you can have a longer 4th gear

Some play in the input shaft when the gearbox is removed is normal AFAIK.
There is no real bearing in the bellhousing under the shaft seal to support the shaft, just an oil sleeve. The shaft is supported with the pilot bearing in the crankshaft.
Otherwise as Aidan already said.

I've done this and it is a very worthwhile upgrade if you have plenty of torque available. It climbs hills really well and is much more relaxed cruising. 4th is .77 (was .85) that's 11% longer. The only downside is that 30mph limits are right in the gap between 3rd and 4th now.
