Gearbox query 5 or 4 speed?

A forum user has a terminally ill 5 speed gearbox. On dropping the oil for inspection garage emailed these photos...

And a small bearing came out too...

Also the linkage from gear lever to box is knackered according to the garage.

So should owners seek out a rare used five speed and refurb linkage? Or should they source the more readily available four speed and refresh linkage to match this type of box for their 1983 DG1.9?

Regards
Stuart

grab a 4 speed, remove the tophat from under the spring under the reverse switch housing and it can be driven with the 5 speed stick

Aidan, that is great advice. Even though l dont really understand what you are suggesting, your response is very much appreciated. But l suspect the garage will understand it.
Thanks again

:ok

I have a spare 4 speed box Stu, no idea on the condition but you can select all the gears OK with the selector. Although I guess that means very little.

Cheers Steve,
Trying to help out a young couple whom got stung with initially a dodgy engine...and now a failed gearbox
If it selects okay then what else does it need to do? :rofl
Wil let them know.
Cheers mate

I mean true but bearings and such could be monged. But I guess you take that chance with any gearbox that hasn't been rebuilt.

As there are a myriad of gearboxes out there what codes match petrol engines.

There’s a big table of the various gearbox codes and ratios here on the RJES website.

Thanks Clift_d. :ok

So now as least l now know we all have equal reverse ratios...

As long as the final drive ratio match or is close, in this case 4.86, does it matter what happens in between?
Dont want to end up with a workhorse gearbox made for a builders van.

4.86 is DU or similar petrol box, will be fine, just stay away from the diesel boxes except in desperation

Not to offend or anything aidan I have a DX code mated to my DG, thats runs OK, might have to play gear selection roulette with big hills sometimes but other than that I don't have problems. 60mph is about 3k so thats fine for me.
