I am just fitting up new bumpers and end caps for my van and each end cap kit has a plastic distance piece in. As far as I can tell they are only used on the front bumper. Does anyone know their purpose as it isn't obvious to me? It is 8A in the diagram.

Is it some sort of screw retaining clip.

Looks like a spire clip to me.

The angle of the end of the front bumper is different than the rear related to the side. The bumper is more curved.
That distance piece is shaped like a wedge and corrects that angle.
However it is not really noticeable if it is missing.

BTW it is part of the fitting kit

1x Plastic wedge (clips over the end of the bumper to give the bolt a flat surface, stops the end cap getting deformed whilst tightening the nut)
