Radiator Fan Options?

I have to investigate a noisy radiator fan before too long, suspect I may need to replace.

Any opinions on sticking with original or going with a more modern universal setup?

I would imagine fitting a non standard one would be a problem because of fitting to the radiator and other bolt on/bracket connections, also recently read about two stage fan speeds but cannot find link if this would work on an alternate Radiator fan, no doubt somebody will have fitted a different one and will advise shortly. Just to add when you say noisy is it a bearing issue or catching on something.

As yet I’ve still to get under and have a proper look.

But if I decide to do radiator while I’m on (preventative maintenance) I’m just weighing up options.

Universal fans would mean ditching existing cowl but would in theory allow a much larger fan to be used. Most come with fittings to pass through radiator fins, another reason to consider a new radiator if I go down this route.

When you say new radiator I guess you a are talking about the same type due to the coolant hose configuration and bleeding procedure.

Yes, changing the radiator for a non standard option other than the thicker version doesn’t make sense as they are readily available and easily up to the job.

Fans/motor design/technology has moved on quite a bit on the other hand.

You can buy them new.
The 500W version is available with a 7 blade version which is quieter a bit.
Partnr 443 959 455N. I bought an Automega branded one

Saw the 500w ones but requires the diesel shroud and things get expensive.

A 16” Spal fan can be had for around £70 and only draws 7.4A.

While I’m most likely to stick with original I do like investigating off the shelf alternatives.

Came across a modern VW fan 5Q0959455AH that may bolt up in place of the 450w 305mm. Only 200w so may not shift enough air, saying that it may be a more efficient design.

Next time I’m at a breakers may have a look.

Ok so the plot thickens…..

Had chance to get a look today.

I’ve a 3 wire fan so presume it’s the lower power unit.
I have a 3 pin fan switch fitted to radiator along with 3pin wiring.

Tested fan by bridging connections - fan works at both speeds without excessive noise.

Second issue, radiator is not leaking but has seen better days, so thought if I’m going to drop it I should consider replacing. Measured across the bottom an it’s near enough 60mm. Standard appears to be 34 or 42mm.
Think I’m right in assuming the 42mm is core size and probably corresponds with the 60mm I’m measuring.

Fan sorted - slight bend in cowling and failed weld.

Radiator - moved to new topic.
