Timing setup, 2.0 CU Aircooled (video)

Hey there, can you look over my timing setup?
I'm having problems with the van stumbling under acceleration, with low power. But I want to make sure we have timing set up properly first before I look into carb issues.
Timing wotsit is bypassed (plugs connected together).
Vacuum pipes connected - forward one to carb base, rear one to balance pipe.
4-6 deg ATDC at idle, as per Haynes.
Timing advances, but I have noticed that sometimes it retards under harsher acceleration?
RPM is... probably right? The needle on the gauge likes to twitch, I don't know what that's about. It's connected to the same terminal as the green wire from the coil.
