Water Pipe

1987 DG engine.
Metal water pipe between thermostat and water pump has a couple of bumps on it. Assume corrosion on inside?
Just a thought. What is against cutting out the centre section of this pipe, where the lumps are, and inserting a piece of rubber hose, plus clips of course. The ends of this pipe goes into rubber anyway.
Anyone any thoughts?

Do you mean this one ?

I wouldn’t bodge it with rubber , it’s too big a leak to risk in my opinion , when the correct part is a available in stainless, fit it and forget it

When I replaced mine it was getting thin but the stainless was out of stock…….
Wish I’d waited….. a few years on and it’s starting to show signs of corrosion.
If I got chance of one at a good price I’d jump.

Yep that's the one. Problem solved. I have found a couple of other spots that are not looking good so it will have to be a new one.
Stainless???? Yes will last for years but....original has lasted this long ie 33 years and I am not getting any younger so my current thought is £40 for m/s and £120 for s/s....No brainer.

That was my thought….. but replacements are nowhere near the quality of originals. Mine required a bit of tweaking to fit iirc and as I said a few years on starting to show signs of decay….
If you plan to keep van 5yrs plus I’d say stainless but that’s just my own opinion. I’m sure the pattern part will last a while longer yet.
However…… don’t think the difference in price was anywhere near that when I bought mine, think mild steel was about £36 and stainless was around £65-70

Yep. My on my first camper l fitted stainless. Fit and forget for sure. About 50 quid in 2009. Never showed any corrosion, even when l sold camper in 2017. So well worth it.
I got another recently (this year) from JK discounted to £88.00. I insure camper with them and in return they offer some discounted parts to me. Waiting for engine swap later this year or next to fit it.

Wont be the same M/S quality l reckon. They last about 3-5 years now. Lots of driving prevents internal rusting providing the correct coolant is used.

Well if you want a original vw mild steel one, I have one kicking about in the stores I think , if not two …..
I took one off when I moved the engine tween busses and fitted the stainless one I had been carrying about for about ten years , kept saying when I next had to drain the system I would change it…..
