Does anybody have any experience of a slipping Auto Gearbox?
My '89 2.1 MV auto seems to be suffering cross contamination of the ATF and Coolant: the ATF level drops and the Coolant looks to have a film on it.
I've read about fitting an External ATF Cooler kit instead of the stock NLA heatexchanger set up and I've found a pretty comprehensive kit - is this something DIYable on the driveway?
I also wonder whether I could/should renew the seals between ATF and Diff, even though all the seals were replaced a little while before Lockdown.
As a side note, I just recently fitted the excellent Brickwerks Stainless Coolant pipe to replace my rusty original, so I guess the coolant had to find somewhere else to leak into!!

When this happened to me I was told my box was scrap. Luckily I had a spare box. Have a read of this.

Yeah that's what I'm trying to avoid

I've seen that article, thanks, and I'm hoping to get hold of that external cooler they sell.
I'm fairly confident it's early enough to save and the bus is now parkewd up until I can get it sorted

Hmmm! Wish l hadnt read this

Since buying my auto in 2017 lve not had any gearbox issues at all....until this year's really cold winter in Feb and March. On the coldest days, the gearbox took a bit of time to get going. Say about 15 seconds after initial start up before getting proper drive. Yet fine in this warm weather.
Both gear oils changed in 2020 and new filter and seal. Should l be investigating?ATF oil perfectly clean and correct level.
Rob, did you buy direct from GoWesty or through a UK outlet?..CamperCulture?

I don't think you need to be checking Stu. But I would recommend you get the external cooler as the original ones are known to break down internally. Although if you could find a new original one then fit that and save yourself a fair bit.
I bought it from GW direct and had it shipped to one of our member's sons in the states who was coming over here to Nottingham. Then had it picked up at his hotel and delivered to me here. How's that for a Club8090 express.

I think there are other oil cooler options ….. Simon told me about one he fitted to a Subaru converted one , but I can’t remember the details, but I think it was IzzyBarnards

				Evening
As Mocki said Simon (toomanytoys) put together an oil cooler kit for my van.
With the extra work the Subaru conversion puts on the Autobox it seemed sensible to replace the original gearbox oil cooler.
Couple of photos if it helps, there is also a protective grill fitted but not shown in the photos.

Looks like a tidy set up. I think the GoWesty kit is a nice low profile, comprehensive kit.
Is it possible to fit on a driveway?

Yes, shouldn't be a problem, just need a bit of wriggle room under the van.
