I'm in the process of fitting a new fuel tank.  Old tank removed which was quite a challenge and my new tank is painted up ready to fit the rubber seals before fitting.

When you fit the rubber seals are they just fitted dry or is some sealant recommended to ensure they don't leak?

This is such a horrible job I definitely want to get this right first time. 

You could put a smear of silicon grease on them, just to help them on.

Thanks both for the suggestions. I can see how this will help with assembly too.  From my experience with taking the old tank out anything which helps the parts go together can only help.  I suspect this task isn't going to be the nicest job.

Replacing slightly weeping plastic coolant pipes with stainless pipes whilst the tank is out... 

fit the grommets to the tank pretty dry and then lube them ready to fit the balance pipe, which is attached to the body, once the tank is raised into place, long pry bar with some padding on and your hand will be able to push them into the grommets

At least when the new tank goes in, it is completely empty and is Definitely lighter than the old one coming out (which probably had fair bit of fuel still in it, right? ).

Trolley jack that doesn't leak down would be best too. I must get a new one
