Oil Breather Tower

Reading recent articles associated with this and an old one by Itchyfeet, how important is this unit and how can it be tested in situ to see if it is functioning correctly, and what are the implications if it is not working. Looking on line and reading articles about oil breathers in general, if they do not function properly they could allow pressure to build up in the engine and cause damage to seals etc, is this also relevant or should I say just as important to T25s.
