gear linkage

Gearstick has always been quite loose and wobbly but not caused too much of an issue.  However, what has become increasingly noticeable has been the difficulty from 1st to 2nd or reverse to 1st.  It seems to get tangled and there’s a delay in it clicking in to place.
From my total lack of mechanical sense, I’m guessing gear linkage mechanism needs a refurb?
I’ve asked my mechanic to tackle this for me but he wants me to source the parts – which I may need help with.

Ok, it's all do-able. Brickwerks is the best place for the rebuild parts imho.

Lots of good info in the wiki on rebuilding the linkage.

First up, are you a 4 speed, 5speed or syncro box?

Matt

As above - Brickwerks do all the bushes etc that will need replacing. The guide in the Wiki is excellent and covers all types. I followed it when I stripped my complete linkage and now my gear shifts are as smooth as a modern car. Have to say that I luckily have the use of a ramp which made the whole process more straightforward.

Top banner of the club 80-90 page.

It's like the room of requirement for all things wedge shaped.... Go to the manual gearbox section, there is a section on refurbishing the 5 speed linkage....

I'm guessing this is what I need?
Can anyone confirm that this is the right kit for my van and that it's the kit to rebuild the front part of the linkage?  Thanks

If your van is definitely a late one, and it's a 5 speed petrol, that's the one. That kit covers all the stuff at the gearbox end of the linkage, and about halfway to the front of the van with the various bushes along the rod. It's everything you need, minus the actual gearstick pivot that is in the cabin at the front of the van

PS the gearstick end of the linkage is much simpler to replace, and you could do that at a later date if you wanted

I think it's possible though that it's the gearstick end of the linkage that is causing the issue.  Should I get the kit and the gearstick pivot too?

It's all a cumulative build of play in all the moving parts, so it's all as important as the other bits I think. Saying that, I've replaced all mine, apart from the plastic universal joint near the back end- I didnt have any play in that after giving it a good check and wiggle. So I guess that simplified a portion of the job.

This is the gearstick joint at the front-

I think you're right.  I'll get the full kit.
