Hi,
I’ve replaced the glow plugs and rocker cover gasket but now it won’t start, I’m worried I’ve cross threaded one of the glow plugs and somethings stuck in the cylinder.

Certainly sounds like it

Please please help. I’m 18 and I have no idea what I’m doing lol.
It’s a 1.6D diesel 1985 t3 air cooled
I have a video but can’t see how I can add it on here,

We need more information to be able to help.

Does the engine turn over on the starter, or does it jam at a certain point?
If it tuns over, is it fast or sluggish.
Did it always start OK before you did the work. or is that why you changed the glowplugs?
Have you done anything else, like work on the fuel system.
Does the glowplug light on the dash come on with the ignition, then stay on for 12seconds (cold) or 0 seconds (hot) before you attempt to start?

Where are you. There may be a diesel owner member near you who might be able to help.


 

It will be water-cooled fella. Not air-cooled.

It could have had an air cooled Lister engine transplanted into it!

So sometimes the starter just whirrs and doesn’t actually engage. But when I try again it’s fine.
When it turns over it’s really slow
I changed the plugs because it was bad when cold starting, would take a lot of pumping and a few turns and blow out a load of grey smoke.
Glow plug light doesn’t come on at all.

I’ve had advice off two people that it might be “hydrolocked” because I put a load of wd40 down one of the glow plug hole like a tw*t because I thought it would help it go in.
Just letting it settle for a few days and going to try again.

From that final description, I would look at the starter motor connections.

Possibly give the whole thing a good clean.

Both electrical connections, and the solenoid operating arm... etc.

Are you using the cold start?

That’s sounds very laboured maybe try jump starting it as well as Checking the connection.

Took them off to replace with new ones but didn’t fit.
I’m not using the cold start as I don’t really know where it is.
Same with the starter motor, I’m a complete novice so can’t actually find it the only thing I could find is this

I bought a new battery so should be alright on that front.
I’ll check the connections soon I’ll be at work for a few days so just time to think instead of tinker at the moment

Cold start handle is to the left of the steering wheel at the bottom edge of the dash. Pull out to operate, push back in after starting.
