It would make a good page for the wiki; late water pump, thermostat housing, coolant distributor, bleed rail & clips, the ‘late cooling system’ schematic from the wiki along with this exploded diagram from 7 zap vw.

Imho not worth doing. Quite expensive and little benefit. Used to be made necessary by scarcity of early parts (thermostat housing and cross pipe, mainly), but these are available as aftermarket parts now, so I'd just replace what's needed.

I agree with above. Besides you dont need a rusting front to back (or is it back to front) metal coolant pipe to worry about.
My last camper had early cooling system.
I found it easier to work on.

BTW I do have a very nice condition early thermostat housing for sale with a couple of cross over pipes too :pimp

I Am  going to be doing this on one of ours in the near future ,  mostly so I only have to carry late spares , so both of our campers are using the same spares .... but also because the front to back pipes need changing so while it’s all out and drained down it seems the right thing to do ....

I have been collecting the parts .....

Did anyone do this? I am swapping an older engine into a newer van so have the newer cooling system that I need to knit into. Everything is pretty much the same apart from the old thermostat which I assume will need bypassing somehow. Has anyone got some sage advice/ experience please?

Take all the old cooling stuff off the replacement engine and fit the late stuff from your original engine. Keep it as it should be, no need to mix the two systems. Earth the wire that should have gone to your high pressure oil switch below the water pump (not fitted on early engine).
