1.6 or 2.0?

Never had an Aircooled. Can anyone tell me if this is 2.0 or 1.6? As far as you can tell from a photo does it look OK and not messed with?

And the second part of the question - one thing stands out, the vacuum pipes are missing on the retard side so you may have a high idle speed or incorrect ignition timing. Not ideal, especially on an auto! Also, the advance pipe goes to the wrong carb. Check that the redundant spigots are effectively blanked off, LHS carb (ported), and idle circuit pipe behind airbox.

His 1.9 DG is an auto, no mention of the Aircooled gearbox. In addition to the retard pipe missing, the mixsing engine tinware seal is vital to keep the engine cool. Well, maybe not today, it's blinking cold out there! There's a ware line on the engine bay, so must have had one recently.

Looking closer, there is a seal, but it is not touching the engine bay sides. Maybe the engine mounts are shot letting the engine e sag down?

Thanks for the input. I'll go(with armed some vacuum hose) and have a look if its still around after lockdown.

It's all there in the pic! The yellow plastic label is the dipstick & fill tube for the auto box. I don't think he has a DG any more as he sold it once it became too reliable - hence the desire for an aircold?

Pull the air filter box off, it looks like the advance pipe goes to the underneath balance pipe , I can’t see the retard part of the distributor pipe work , the engine seal looks like it may have dropped down the back of the engine tin

Too reliable and LPG was too cheap. It really has been 100% reliable since I sold it, thought it would be, I'd done everything, including the gaskets just weeks before selling. Should have kept it in hindsight but ULEZ would have done for it next year anyway. This van is old enough to be exempt. Are aircooleds less reliable? Need to find out more about engine seals

Ah, thought the label was just a random sticker, not had an auto myself. Both my Aircooled have been very reliable. Now that was tempting fate!

Broke my leg last year and have lots of screws and plate so I need an auto. Early autos aren't very common so I think Ill go and look. Is the seal from engine to engine bay?

Got to be worth a look, mot history doesn't read too badly, anything that you get at that age will need work and it is an auto

If anyone can tell me where all these vacuum pipes should start and finish I'd be grateful. Gave my Haynes away with van and can't see any images online. I see that the big seal runs along the back of the engine bay, what's its purpose?

Hello,
I've done lots of these..
But as a 'radical ' engine builder all the unecessary clat is removed.
My photos are on Flikr and I can't seem to transfer them...but here is a video:
I know the traditionalists will scream, wail, and utter dread warnings...
However I need simple, reliable and cool running...
How much confidence should you have in a 40 year old electromechanical ignition system..
Thermostat and cooling flaps mechanism....binned.
Vacuum operated pre-heat..binned
More info here
:
You do need, however the engine seal to separate upper and lower compartments. Do you have the under engine tins in place..often missing..
If you remove the air cleaner we can get a better looksee..
Cordialement,
