Went for Plan-C, jacked up a few inches. Dragged TDI out. Stripped what parts I could off it, to make it lighter and then shifted it. TDI still turns using the flywheel, so it’s not seized. Parts came off it fairly easily, so it hasn’t been stood too long; not sure but I think it could be ok. Garrett Turbo.

I’ll leave this gearbox in, drain it, add new gasket, swap bell housing, then refill 3.5 litres of GL4. I’ll make sure I can undo the filling hex sump plug before I remove the drain sump though. I’ve got a Hex Socket for that. Should only be 20Nm, so I’m confident they will come out.

I’ll measure the distance between the runners and send the info.

1993 1.9 TDI 89bhp free to collect @ RG8. There is a scrap yard 20 minutes up the road for this unless your friends T4 need free parts? It turns but not really a donor swap IMO. I’ve seen the huge list of requirements for a TDI swap in a T4....the list is long!

Engine
Turbo
Wiring Loom
Intercooler
ECU
Fuse box
Throttle Position Sensor
Clocks
Not immobiliser though as it’s pre ‘95
Oh and a key of course which I don’t have !

Easy?!

Anyway, let’s get back to Waterboxer stuff - because we like those

...Excellent device

There was a brand new 228mm clutch, clutch plate & release bearing left in the locker box, “which was nice” - but I do need a petrol starter motor.

I’ve got a new starter motor bush somewhere.

Gasket for gearbox bell housing arrived, so can crack on with that this weekend whilst freezing to death.

Great stuff, nice when the packages come through door - Saturday’s meant to be the warmer day mate. Look forward to the update.

The engine bay in glorious 'Technicolour'

I've bought some panel wipe, etch primer, LH5G (medium blue) & clear coat, so the engine bay will look good and the bodywork won't :)

Some vans this time of year maybe sitting. I'd like to put your mind at rest, when the clappety clappety noise starts after this event (lifter oil drain); there is nothing to worry about:

I have put an enquiry into Avenue Coatings for some LH5G Rustoleum. Might as well tidy the engine bay up while the engine is out
Doesn't look bad at all there Martin - i just painted my bay in Black Hammerite which does the job - I also spray Bilt Hamber Dynax S50 into the corners.

I’m not really into painting engine parts as it flakes off after a while. I want patina, so I wired wheeled it then applied some ‘clear coat’ & I’m pleased with the results. You can see the hard life it’s had but now has a resin coat to prevent future rust.
